Thursday, August 14, 7 PM -- The Shelton Laurel Massacre: Madison County's Civil War History. at the Ebbs Chapel Performing Arts Center Auditorium.
Guests: Sheila Kay Adams and Dan Slagle. Interviewed by Taylor Barnhill.
2025 marks the 160th anniversary of the end of the American Civil
War. The counties of the NC mountains were divided between Union
and Confederate sympathies.
The most notorious event in Madison County during the Civil War was
the Shelton Laurel massacre when thirteen old and young from the
northern (Unionist) section of the county were executed in retaliation
for a “salt raid” on Confederate storehouses in Marshall.
Master storyteller Sheila Kay Adams was born and raised in upper Madison County and collects stories of the region. Dan Slagle
is recognized as a premier local researcher of Madison County’s
documentary history. Taylor Barnhill will lead them in bringing
the tragedy of the massacre to life.
Note the evening time and day variation to accommodate our Upper Laurel neighbors and others who find evening more convenient.
